Councillor David Moore was elected as the new Chair of Newark and Sherwood District Council during its Full Council meeting on Tuesday 19 May.

Councillor Moore was nominated by Councillor Paul Peacock and seconded by Councillor Simon Forde.

Councillor Moore said: “It’s an honour to take on the role of Chair at Newark and Sherwood District Council. I’m looking forward to grasping every opportunity this year will offer and am committed to working hard to serve the residents of the district. I would like to thank Councillor Linda Tift for all her hard work, including her fundraising activities over the last year.

“This year, during my time as Chair, I will be supporting, fundraising for, and raising awareness of an incredibly important charity, the Children’s Bereavement Centre.”

Outgoing Chair, Councillor Linda Tift, said: “I am hugely grateful for my time as Chair and have attended some amazing events which highlight the fantastic work that the District Council and the community do tirelessly.

“Only last Sunday, I attended the closing ceremony of the Knife Angel, which was an emotional and thought-provoking occasion. Hundreds of people from across the community came together to reflect and remember those affected by knife crime. It was a real honour to represent the District Council at this incredibly important event.

“Other highlights included the Community and Sports Awards, which celebrated 13 truly inspiring individuals from across our community, each recognised for the difference they make to others. Our Armed Forces events across the district were also particularly moving, offering meaningful opportunities to come together, show our appreciation, and honour those who serve and have served.

“During my tenure, I was delighted to raise £2000 for the Emmaus Trust and will continue to support these fantastic charities. I look forward to working closely with all fellow Councillors and supporting Councillor David Moore in his new role.”

Councillor Debbie Darby was elected as the new Vice-Chair. Councillor Darby will work closely with Councillor Moore to represent the District Council.
