Advent Calendars
Silver Recycling Bin: Card sleeve or box
Household Waste Bin: Plastic tray, plastic wrappers, foil window
Why can't I recycle these items in kerbside bins?
Plastic trays and wrappers are made from mixed materials that our local recycling facility can't currently sort. Foil is not of a good enough quality to recover aluminium from and it is often greasy, which contaminates other recyclables.
Tip: Take soft plastics to supermarket collection points. Find your nearest location at Recycle Now

Domestic Batteries: Place domestic batteries in a bag on top of any bin on collection day
Electronics: Recycle at your local Recycling Centre

Christmas Cards
Tear foil or glittery cards in two:

Christmas Crackers
Silver Recycling Bin: Outer card tube (no foil or glitter), paper gifts, bad jokes
Household Waste Bin: Foil or glitter outer card tube, non-paper gifts, the 'bang', paper hats, ribbon and string
Why can't I recycle these items in kerbside bins?
Foil - is bonded to the card and can't be separated during recycling.
Glitter - is made of tiny plastic or metal pieces that contaminate recycled paper.
Gifts - are often made from mixed plastics, which are difficult to recycle.
The ‘bang’ - contains a tiny explosive compound and mixed materials.
Paper hats - are made from tissue paper which is too thin and not good enough quality for standard recycling.
Ribbon or string - are usually made from plastic, metallic materials or paper, which can’t be recycled due to the material and size as they could get caught in the sorting machines.
Tips: Save ribbons to decorate gifts. Compost paper hats in your at-home compost bin. Tear off the gunpowder component from the ‘bang’ and recycle the paper strip.
