No Mow May

We once again joined the No Mow May initiative and let the grass grow in May 2025!

During the month of May our Street Scene Team cut back on the mowing of certain areas of various Council-owned green spaces and country parks. In doing so the grass was left to grow and wild flowers bloomed, resulting in a ‘nectar feast’ for pollinators such as honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies and moths, and beetles.

These specific areas were chosen in order to ensure there were still areas being mown which still allowed residents to continue activities such as dog walking, and allowed children to play in more maintained green spaces.

Selected sections of grass left to grow were:

  • Bishops Drive Cemetery, Southwell
  • Clay Lane, Newark
  • Edgehill Drive, Newark
  • Holy Rood Church Cemetery, Ossington
  • Marston Moor Road, Newark
  • Queen Elizabeth Memorial Garden, Newark
  • Parfitt Drive, Farnsfield
  • Rainworth Open Water, Rainworth
  • Sconce and Devon Park, Newark
  • Stanley Terrace Railway Walk, Newark
  • St Marys Church Cemetery, Blidworth
  • Vicar Water, Clipstone
  • Winstanley Drive, Newark

The District Council also worked with partners to leave even more areas of the district to grow. In partnership with Newark Town Council the following areas were left:

  • Barnby Road Play Area
  • Friary Gardens
  • John Pope Way
  • Riverside Park
