Tenant engagement

If you’re a Newark and Sherwood District Council tenant or leaseholder and care about your home, where you live and the housing services that you receive, why not help us to improve what we do and how we do it?

We can help you set up safe events in your community to try to get more people involved or you can work with us individually to improve the services that we offer to all tenants. It really is up to you!

Tenant involvement opportunities

Over the next few months we are reviewing how we do things. Tenants and leaseholders will be able to suggest ways in which they would like to see how things work. Together we will provide a menu of opportunities for all people, whether you have a day to spare, a week or even just five minutes.

In the meantime if you want to get involved now, you can either speak informally to a tenant who is already involved or if you want a general picture about what is available at the moment, email our Tenant Engagement Officers at getinvolved@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.

At Newark and Sherwood District Council, we want tenants to have a real voice in how housing services are run. Our engagement structure gives you lots of different ways to get involved, depending on what suits you best.

At the top level, tenant views feed into important decision‑making groups, such as the Tenant Engagement Board, Housing Assurance Board, and the council’s Policy and Performance Improvement Committee (PPIC).

We also have Tenant Champions for different areas (Newark and Sherwood) and for Building Safety, who help make sure tenant perspectives are heard on key issues.

If you prefer something more hands‑on, you can join one of our specific engagement opportunities, such as:

  • Empty Homes Inspectors
  • Cleaning Inspectors
  • Themed Working Groups
  • Grounds Maintenance Champions
  • Sounding Board
  • Consultations

These roles let you give practical feedback on the services that matter to you.

For people interested in particular issues or topics, our Community Link Groups bring together tenants who want to share ideas, experiences, and solutions.

No matter how you choose to get involved, your voice helps shape safer, fairer, and better homes for everyone.

Tenant Engagement Board

The Tenant Engagement Board (TEB) is a group of tenants who work closely with the council to make sure tenant voices genuinely shape housing services.

The Board looks at what tenants are telling us, checks how well services are performing, and helps us spot where things could be better.

Members review policies, give feedback on planned changes, and make recommendations to improve the way we deliver services. Their role is to make sure real tenant experiences guide what we do and how we do it.

Housing Assurance Board

The Housing Assurance Board (HAB) is responsible for making sure the council is meeting its legal duties, keeping homes safe, and delivering good‑quality services.

It brings together councillors, senior officers, and tenant representatives to look at performance, safety, complaints, and risks across all housing services.

The Board checks that we are doing what we say we will do, holding the service to account, and making sure tenants are treated fairly and consistently.

Tenant Engagement Champions

Following feedback from tenants, Tenant Engagement Champions have been set up to give tenants the opportunity to speak to one another and share their views on their local community with District Council officers.

These champions are here to listen to the views of tenants and raise them with the District Council to action.

More information is available on our Tenant Engagement Champions including details on how you can get involved.

Community Link Groups

Our Community Link Groups complement and provide feedback to our Local Influence Network.

Taking place at locations across the district the Groups provide a more local focus and provide an opportunity for tenants, leaseholders and residents to raise issues and ideas that are specific to their local community. Issues and ideas discussed at the Community Link Groups will be raised to the local LIN Chair for further discussion at the LIN meetings and through to the District Council for consideration.

More information is available on our Community Link Group webpage including details of when the next meetings are taking place.

Estate walkabouts

Estate walkabouts are a great way for you to help us keep our communities clean, tidy and problem free. You will meet other tenants, staff members and agencies involved in maintaining acceptable standards in our communities.

Our estate walkabout schedule for 2026 is currently under review, we will share updates on the calendar when plans and dates are finalised.
